Learn from a Master Portrait Artist! Award-winning artist Laurel Stern Boeck has been characterized as one of the nation’s foremost Portrait Painters. From her earliest years, Boeck has been fascinated with the human subject and the art of portraiture. Educated at the prestigious Arts Students League and receiving a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Boeck has had the privilege to paint prominent leaders in the fields of business, government, and education. Her work can be seen in major capitols, banks, board rooms, universities, supreme courts, private homes, and Washington institutions.
Boeck has studied under renowned artists John Murray, Burton Silverman, and Ron Sherr, and has traveled extensively throughout Europe studying the work of the Old Masters. Her dedication to her craft is evident in the timeless quality of her work that embraces classical realism and brilliantly captures the likeness of her subject. The best portraits both capture the essence of the subject, and infuse the painting with the spirit of their life. The skill and precision Boeck pours into her work has earned her recognition in national publications including The New York Times and International Artist magazine, among others. She was awarded the Merit Scholarship from the Arts Students League in 1994 and received an Honorable Mention in the nation’s largest portrait competition sponsored by Artist Magazine in 1994/1995. She has also been featured in exhibitions such as the Knickerbockers’ Art Show (1992), the Salmagundi Art Show (1993) and the Northern Westchester Center of Art (2000). In addition to her busy commission schedule, Boeck also teaches in New York. Guided by the principles handed down to her from her own teachers, Boeck instructs her students in technique while encouraging them to embrace their own style. Boeck is also an active member of several prominent art organizations; Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, The Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists, Green County Arts Council, and the Portrait Society of America.

This is a hands-on workshop dedicated to drawing and painting the head in the classical tradition. What better place to have this workshop than in Tuscany, Italy where we can benefit from the treasures of the UffiziMuseum.
Expand on your skills using the proven process of classic techniques. Beginners to advanced artists will gain from drawing and painting portraits surrounded by the same atmosphere which has inspired artists through the centuries.
Concentration will be on developing drawing skills and principles of constructing the head covering all aspects of proportion, values, and composition. Techniques for developing a likeness will be discussed and demonstrated. Portions of the anatomy and the problems they present in drawing and painting will be discussed. There will be a number of exercises in color theory and color mixing and we'll concentrate on the various techniques of developing warm and cool flesh tones andmaintaining a likeness as the painting progresses. In preparation, there will be a special discussion on planning the portrait.
