Landscape Paintings by Artist, Sam D'Ambruoso
Introducing original landscape paintings by Sam D'Ambruoso. These oil paintings, inspired by New England and Italian landscapes, have been completed in the plein air (outdoor) tradition. Commissioned studio works are also available upon request. Working as a post-impressionist realist, his painterly approach to the landscape and still life draws the viewer into an environment rich in color and composition. As he has explained in recent classes and workshops: "I'm continually searching for the play of darks against lights, expressed in vivid colors all in a painterly style. From florals to portraits, the light becomes the drama, the feeling, the truth, which engages the viewer."
One afternoon in Tuscany, as it so often happens, I was driving through the countryside when all of a sudden I had seen this incredible image of two cypresses on a hill. I slammed on the brakes and started painting ! It was titled "A Tuscan Dream" since it really resembled a dreamscape.

Whenever we visit Positano on our annual Amalfi Italy workshop, I am continually captured by the beautiful fishing boats on the beach. Quite often, they are in an array of different colors. On this day, the color theme was yellow and white. Everytime I visit this magnificent town on the Amalfi Coast, I am quickly setting up brush, paints, and canvas!

I was on my way to do some striper fishing in Rhode island. Driving along Rt 1 by Charlestown, I saw this diner and was certainly ready for breakfast having travelled since the early morning hours. As a drove behind the diner, I saw this magnificent pond surrounded by willows. The striper fishing was put on hold...needless to say...until this painting was completed.

Older wooden barns in New England are a vanishing species giving way to more complex metal structures. I spend considerable time in the outdoors painting (or fly fishing!) and am continually attracted to the simplicity of these subjects which I try to further simplify on a two dimensional surface. Perhaps it's the remembrance of simpler times that attracts me to this subject.

My fascination with old New England barns will continue forever. I found these beauties in Roxbury CT, the home of many old barns and a good replication of early Americana. Once again, the red barn against the green background continues to engage the viewer...and painter.

As often happens in our oil painting classes, a painting occurs that captures the mind and spirit of oil painting in genreal. Here is an excellent example of a study in light. We had to paint quickly since peppers can't stand alone by themselves.

This painting was completed while standing in the Florence Griswold Museum Gardens in Old Lyme on a sunny, June morning. The peonies were in full bloom. The background of dark pines, other greens and the sunlit peonies in the foreground, created the dramatic patterns of this painting. Although the original was sold, other similar scenes of these peonies are painted periodically when in season. Call us and we will send along another picture of the peonies we recently painted..

This painting reflects the atmosphere and light of Long Island Sound at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The scale of this land- and seascape is just short incredible. Coupled with the blues and whites, it is the eternal summer scene. This is one of our painting locations at our Annual Old Lyme Workshop held every July.
